Why is the city called São Thomé das Letras?

According to a legend, São Thomé das Letras’ name has its origin because of the supposed encounter of a statue of São Thomé in a cave by João Antão. He was a fugitive slave of João Francisco Junqueira, who also had with him a perfectly written letter (something impossible for an illiterate slave). Another version says that this letter possibly was delivered in the cave to João Antão by a gentleman in white robes. In The legend says that through showing the letter to his former owner, as ordered by the man in white robes, João Antão obtained his manumission, since João Francisco Junqueira was very impressed by the slave's story.  Also João Francisco Junqueira ordered the construction of a church next to the cave, which was later on surrounded by São Tomé das Letras downtown. It is believed, João Francisco Junqueira’s son, Gabriel Francisco Junqueira, is buried under the altar of the church, the present "Mother Church". The "das Letras" part of the toponym refers to the rock inscriptions that can still be seen in the cave where the statue of São Thomé was found.

How did São Thomé develop through recent times?

Back in the 1990s, São Thomé attracted people from different regions to live a life as far as possible from capitalism mainstream human culture. By now, the energies of common society have regained control over most of the original spirit. However, there is still a considerable number of visitors going to the municipality to find peace and freedom. Known also as rustic city, São Thomé today draws many tourists who are interested in nature, arts and esoterism. The village is a highlight for people that are curious about extraterrestrial activity. This phenomena is caused by the local stories of people experiencing UFOs flying around in the area. In the near by city of Varginha (79 km away), there is even an official documented crash of an unidentified flying object, registered in the year of 1996.
